The red planet. our nearest neighbour, Mars was named by roman after the God of War, because the red colour reminds them of blood
Mars is approx half the size of Earth, and the conditions are very different to Earth, although Mars has a thin atmosphere and seasons, nothing grows there, it’s red desert-like surface is littered with dust and rocks, there is no water on the surface, however, there is ice below the surface near the poles
Mars has 2 lumpy moons, discovered in 1877 called deimoss, and phobos, phobos is the larger of the 2 moons, they are so tiny that it is believed they were asteroids pulled into orbit by Mars gravity
Mars also has the largest known volcano in the solar system called Olympus mons, there is also a very large valley on Mars so big it stretches across the USA, also because Mars is mostly rock and dust it is prone to strong winds and dust storms.
