Jupiter

The king of planets, Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, it is a gas giant, made mainly of hydrogen, it would take over 1000 Earth to be the same size, it takes 12 years to orbit the sun,

The giant red spot is a permanent hurricane, that in size is twice as big as the Earth, it was discovered in 1666, and takes about a week to turn in an anti-clockwise direction, despite its size, Jupiter spins faster than any other planets, in fact, one rotation takes just under 10 hours, it spins so fast that it bulges slightly at the equator, and its clouds are pulled into thick bands

Despites it huge size Jupiter is shrinking, very slowly, because of its gravity pulling, Jupiter produced more heat than it gets from the sun

Jupiter larger well known moons

Jupiter has now up to 79 moons (discovered so far), and more not yet discovered, most are tiny and dark in colour, scientist think many of them are asteroids that have caught by Jupiters immense gravity

the four largest common moons are Europa, Ganymede, Io, and callisto
